Who has to take the Swedish citizenship test?

The knowledge requirement for Swedish citizenship applies to people between 16 and 66 years old. But not everyone in that age range needs to take the test itself — there are other ways to meet the requirement.

A referral letter is required

You can only take the citizenship test if you've received a referral letter from the Swedish Migration Agency. It's the Migration Agency, not UHR, that decides who needs to take the test versus who already meets the requirement another way.

Alternatives to the test

You can show your knowledge through:

  • Grades from Swedish compulsory or upper secondary school
  • Studies at komvux or folkhögskola
  • A passing grade in SFI course D

If you don't have any of these, you'll get the opportunity to take the citizenship test instead.

The test is Swedish-only

A common misunderstanding: the test isn't available in other languages. The real, official test is always held in Swedish — UHR doesn't offer translation, regardless of what language you otherwise speak.

That's why Medborgarplugg exists in six languages. You practice in your own app language — Swedish, English, Arabic, Persian, Spanish or Somali — but can turn on a translation language at any time to see the question in Swedish too, so you recognize the words ahead of the real test day.
