How the Swedish citizenship test is structured

The citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet) is a knowledge test for people who have applied for Swedish citizenship and received a referral letter from the Swedish Migration Agency. The test covers knowledge about Swedish society, and is written entirely in Swedish — regardless of what language you otherwise speak.

Format

The test is multiple choice: each question has four answer options, one of which is correct. The test is written on paper, not digitally, and is in Swedish only — UHR doesn't offer any translation of the test questions.

The first test: 60 questions, 90 minutes

The first citizenship test was held on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm, as a pilot test with generous time for all participants. According to UHR, it consisted of about 60 multiple-choice questions with a 90-minute time limit. UHR has said that timing and question-count details for future test occasions will be announced separately — so the exact format may differ somewhat going forward.

Practice the exact same format in the app. Medborgarplugg's exam mode has a setting marked "Official" — 60 questions, 90 minutes, exactly like the real test. Want shorter sessions? You can also choose 10, 20, or 30 questions, or adjust the time limit between 60 and 120 minutes.

Results

Results from the 15 August 2026 test are published in October 2026, on your UHR account, and are automatically reported on to the Swedish Migration Agency.
